Tona Herndon was visiting her husband's grave. She had been married to her beloved for 60 years, and his death was still fresh on her mind. He had passed away just two weeks before the incident. Mourning his loss, suddenly a man came up from behind. He mugged Tona, and ran away with her purse and $700. Eventually police caught him, and the man's mugshot aired on the local news. But the maniac wasn't just a thief, he was a father to 15-year-old Christian Lunsford.
Christian saw his father's mugshot on TV. Needless to say, he was filled with a lot of emotions about his dad's misdeed. When he was 2, his parents divorced and his father hasn't been around much since. However, recently his dad gave him $250 to go on a band trip at school. Christian really wanted to go on the trip, but he didn't really know where his dad got the money. The man had been in and out of jail his whole life; it didn't sit right with Christian.
"There's times that you just feel really low, like, 'Is that going to be me?'" Christian told CBS' Steve Hartman. "'Am I going to end up like that?'"
Christian didn't want to end up like his dad. So he tracked Tona down. He told her he was sorry on behalf of his father. Then he gave her the $250. Tona accepted the money. Then she did something else now that it was hers. She gave it right back.
"I thought that was so, so precious," Tona says. "Any 15-year-old boy who has that much conscience is extraordinary."
