32-Year Old Veteran Dies After Going On A Death Valley Camping Trip With His Girlfriend

A couple who set out on a camping trip in Death Valley experienced a tragic turn of events when their car broke down in a remote area of the national park.

Alex Lofgren and Emily Henkel were reported missing when loved ones realized the two hadn't returned from their camping trip on April 6, two days after they were supposed to be back. A search for the two was executed with the help of multiple agencies across three days.

On the third day, the couple's Subaru was found with their three dogs inside, still alive. They'd left a note that read, "Two flat tires, headed to Mormon Point, have three days' worth of water." Rescuers were able to locate the couple but weren't able to reach them immediately.

They reached the couple the next day, at which point they discovered that Alex, a 32-year-old veteran who served in Afghanistan, had died from his injuries. Emily had suffered a serious foot injury that required medical attention.

"I would like to honor Alexander Lofgren for being such a loving, strong soul. For serving his country, and protecting my sister to the end," Emily's brother told Inside Edition.

A GoFundMe page has been established to help both families with the expenses during this difficult time.
