Paulo Maurice was a Black young man who came to the United States with his family in hopes of living the American dream. Unfortunately, when you’re an immigrant trying to make it in America, times can be challenging, especially on the job front.
Paulo and his family often ended up living in abandoned apartment buildings on the outskirts of New York. Frequently, their clothes would go unwashed due to not having access to clean water.
As Paulo was growing up, he was the first one in his family to go to a public school and learn to read and write. When time permitted, Paulo would go to his local library and read up on engineering and technology because that’s what interested him the most.
When Paulo was 20 years old, he fell madly in love with a woman from his neighborhood named Miranda. After a few months together, they discovered they were pregnant and shortly after, baby Maria came along.
Tragically, after Miranda gave birth, she died. Paulo found himself as a single father without any real job prospects. During the day, he would leave Maria with his mother while he went in search of work.

It took some time, but Paulo finally found work with a prestigious aviation firm. He didn’t have the best clothing options and could hear some his peers making fun of him, but he persisted.
