In 1982, Eartha Kitt Answered Every Question You’ve Ever Had About Love

Eartha Kitt has always been one of my idols. By the time I was coming of age, she was mostly seeking out film roles that took advantage of her eccentricity, aesthetic, and unusual voice.

But like fellow star of stage and screen Audrey Hepburn, Eartha had a long and storied career long before she showed up in Harriet The Spy or Holes. In fact, she started out her career as a vaudeville performer, and then quickly made the leap to a solo vocal career thanks to her beguiling, smoky voice.

She released a string of hits throughout the fifties and sixties, including her famous addition to the Christmas canon, Santa Baby, which has been covered by everyone from Lindsay Lohan to this adorable toddler with a Christmas wish.

But her career ground to a halt after she publicly opposed the Vietnam War, while attending a White House luncheon. It took a decade for her to rebound with a return to Broadway. Unsurprisingly, by then, she had developed a well-deserved reputation for self-sufficiency in the face of dilemmas.

In 1982, she was interviewed for an upcoming documentary profile, which would become All By Myself: The Eartha Kitt Story. When the interviewer asks if she would change herself for a man, she has a truly perfect and inspirational response!
