Jenny had lived with her single mom for as long as she could remember. Her dad was not in the picture, as it had always been just the two of them.
Jenny’s mom, Anica, worked hard as a janitor to make money to support their family. One day, she came home and told her 6-year-old that she was experiencing a terrible bout with her chronic arthritis, making it hard for her to work such long hours.
Anica divulged to Jenny that things would be different for them for at least a little while as she couldn’t handle her current work as a street sweeper. Jenny immediately told her mother that she would pitch in and help her with her janitorial duties so that they could earn enough money for Anica’s arthritis medications.
“You’re not supposed to be working, Jenny. You’re supposed to be working hard at school,” her mother explained.
After a few days of trying to do everything herself while finding it increasingly difficult, Anica decided to allow Jenny to help her after school.
Even at a young age, Jenny was used to helping with chores at home, so she caught on quickly helping her mom with her sweeping duties. Jenny would even sing the songs of her favorite singer as she worked to help the time go by quickly.
