After seeing footage from a recent campaign rally, some critics of President Donald Trump are thinking back to when U.S. presidents “at least pretended to have decency.” On October 25, Nicki Minaj and Trump traveled to Port Huron, Michigan to campaign for Republican candidates. When speaking at the rally in Michigan, Trump made a vulgar comment about Minaj’s body. Of course, a lot of people find the comment extremely “gross and embarrassing.”
At the same time, some critics also thought Trump was attempting to do a bizarre form of “damage control” because of how much people have been discussing the comments he’s made about men’s bodies lately. Either way, people couldn’t imagine any former president making comments like these, and a lot of critics found the clip really hard to watch.
Trump commented on Minaj’s “beautiful a–.”

He did so in the context of explaining his previous comments about Senator Jon Husted’s butt. Lately, a lot of publications and commentators have drawn attention to the times that Trump has fixated on men’s bodies. A comment he made about Husted at a rally earlier this month has been circulating a lot due to these discussions.
“I don’t do this with men very often,” Trump said at the time (notably, his comments about men’s bodies have gone viral on multiple occasions at this point). “I started examining his body, because I didn’t know he was a great athlete. And I looked and I watched up and down. I looked at his a– and I looked at the whole, and then I looked at his hands. Look at his hands. He’s got these, like, claws.”
So, some of Trump’s critics thought that he purposely made the vulgar comment about Minaj to distract from the comments he’s made about men’s bodies.
He really did talk about the Husted comments before mentioning Minaj’s body.
During his speech at the rally, Trump tried to clarify that he made the comments about Husted’s butt “in fun.” He said, “I looked at his a–. I’ve never done that with a man before. Off the record, women? Yes. Men? No.”
He then went on to make the offensive comment about Minaj. “By the way, I looked at one hell of a beautiful a– before,” Trump continued. “Nicki Minaj. That’s hard to miss. Stand up! That’s hard to miss.”
People in the audience cheered. Trump then added, “I hope Nicki wasn’t insulted, but we love Nicki. She’s been with us for a long time.”
Some of his critics speculated that this comment was a strategic effort to distract from his comments about men. “Has he been told to mention the female anatomy after everyone noticed how much he talked about men’s bodies?” someone on Reddit questioned.
Critics called this moment “damage control” for Trump and a “humiliation ritual” for Minaj.

“I’ve never been more uncomfortable and disgusted watching a video,” one person wrote on Reddit. People also commented on how Trump can seemingly say whatever he wants and get away with it. Truthfully, it’s far from the only disturbing thing Trump has said. So, another critic referred to the uncomfortable moment as “just another one of the 50 daily ‘Trumpisms’ that would’ve ended any professional career in the ‘non-insane’ times.”
“I’m almost tired of the thought exercise of ‘what if Biden/Obama did/said this’ but seriously imagine if Obama had said THIS,” someone else commented. “Articles of impeachment would’ve been drawn up instantly.”
“And yet Obama got eviscerated for a tan suit,” another critic added.
Of course, this is nothing new. But people think it “just keeps getting worse and worse and worse.”
“I’m so grossed out,” one critic wrote. “Did any of us ever think our President would be at the podium discussing men’s and women’s a–ess?”
