What to Know
Given the current political climate and state of the world, a lot of critics feel like the recent New York Times feature about Jeff Bezos’ wife, Lauren Sánchez, is certainly… a choice. And a somewhat unexpected critic has spoken out about the whole thing. It all started on April 11, when The New York Times published an article titled, “Someone Has to Be Happy. Why Not Lauren Sánchez Bezos?” The subhead read, “As half of an unfathomably powerful couple, Mrs. Sánchez Bezos seems to have influenced the uber-rich to stop apologizing, and start enjoying themselves.”
And if you’re thinking uhhh… really?, you’re not the only one. Lots of people have commented on how the article feels super out of touch and in poor taste.
The day after the article was published, journalist Katie Couric made her feelings about the piece very clear.

Her succinct comment, which she shared on Threads, has gone viral on social media because she perfectly summed up how a lot of people were feeling about the piece. Katie tagged the writer, Amy Chozick, in her post. “Hi @amychozick 👋🏻,” she wrote. “Are you allowed to refuse assignments? This feels, um, off.”
To which people said… exactly. Some people didn’t expect to see that kind of comment from Katie and were pleasantly surprised by her reaction. One Threads user wrote, “My apologies @katiecouric I was not aware of your game 🔥”
“I always liked you but like you even more with no f—- to give,” someone else wrote. And many others joined Katie in questioning the journalist and the publication. “THIS! Thank you @katiecouric!” another commenter added. “NYT please stop giving these people the attention they crave and we might be getting somewhere.”
People actually thought Katie’s response was perfect.

The article about Lauren is not a short one, but Katie managed to keep her criticism brief. And people loved her for it. “Katie chose violence today, and I’m here for it! 🔥” a commenter on Threads read. Someone else said, “Katie Couric straight up tagging her is sending me. The ‘um’ is gold. Completely savage, no notes.”
After Katie’s post went viral, it also ended up on Reddit. “I never expected Katie Couric to be so cool but here we are and I dig it,” one Redditor commented. Others didn’t even realize The New York Times had published the article about Lauren, and they were clearly as disgusted as Katie was. “This is the first time I’ve heard about this,” someone wrote. “It’s giving ‘let them eat cake’ out-of-touch.”
Referring to Lauren, someone else added, “This lady went up to space at $25M a pop for fun, so that she can literally look down on us. I am sure she is happy. But pardon me if I am not happy about her happiness, and I am also not apologizing for how I feel.”
It’s actually not the first time Katie has commented on articles about Lauren.

Although some people seemed surprised by the way Katie reacted to the recent article, she has not kept her feelings about Lauren a secret. In June 2025, after Lauren and Jeff’s high-profile and controversial wedding, Katie reacted to Vogue’s digital cover that featured Lauren’s wedding dress.
At the time, Katie commented, “Welcome to the eighties—when big hair and conspicuous consumption ruled. Apparently tacky is back,” per The Daily Beast. Oof.
