A 61-year-old woman fell to her death while hiking in North Carolina. The victim, identified by the National Park Service as Nancy Sampson of South Carolina, fell near Glassmine Falls at Mount Mitchell State Park.

According to a statement from the Reems Creek Fire Department, crews arrived at the scene around noon local time on September 23. They had to rappel over 100 feet down to the victim, but by the time they got to her, she had already succumbed to her injuries. Her body was found and recovered by first responders “approximately 150 feet below the overlook."

The woman's husband, Robert Sampson, is absolutely devastated of his wife's death. “My heart is broken. I will miss her smile and kind heart.”

“She was eagerly waiting for me to retire,” he continued. “She had a huge heart and a glowing smile that everyone loved.”
