Over the past several years, it’s become very clear that Meghan Markle’s haters are able to identify problems with basically everything she says and does. Case in point: Meghan recently launched a new product, and her critics took issue with the timing of the launch. Meghan’s new product for her As Ever lifestyle brand, Spiced Apple Butter, dropped on August 26, a day after Dolly Parton’s death.
Apparently, Meghan’s critics found this incredibly inappropriate and inconsiderate. They thought she should’ve pushed the product launch back, especially because she was actively promoting it on August 25, just after Dolly’s death was confirmed.
Meghan’s brand teased the launch in the days leading up to it.
The fact that As Ever posted several apple-related teasers before August 26 suggests that this launch was planned in advance, before Dolly died. As many people on social media shared heartfelt tributes to the late country icon on August 25, the As Ever Instagram account shared an image of the Spiced Apple Butter and captioned it with, “Introducing Spiced Apple Butter 🍎 A sweet taste of late summer, arriving tomorrow, August 26.”
Some of Meghan’s critics argued that even if this post had been pre-scheduled, she could’ve adjusted the timing after Dolly’s death was announced.
A Meghan Markle critic shared the As Ever post on Reddit, writing, “What an idiot. Announcing a new product just hours after Dolly Parton dies. (It may have been prescheduled, but even so, she can cancel it).”
People argued that no one cared about Meghan’s apple butter.
They did have a lot to say about it, though. Unsurprisingly, a lot of Meghan haters bashed her for even selling apple butter at all. They called it generic and unoriginal and said they’d rather buy it from a local farmer’s market than from Meghan. Some also argued it’s too early to promote spiced apple butter, which seems more like a fall thing. Others, however, simply argued that the product launch distracted people from what everyone actually cared about and came across as super “insensitive.”
“Dolly died … No one cares about anything else…. Honestly, nothing else matters today,” someone wrote on Reddit.
“The world is in mourning and she does THIS 🙄” another critic added.
Others thought this was a stretch, though.
After all, there’s no way that Meghan was the only person who posted about something other than Dolly on Tuesday. And surely, other people shared promotional posts as well. So, some people defended Meghan and told the haters to leave her alone.
“What does a spiced apple butter have to do with Dolly Partons passing?” someone wrote on Reddit. “Are we also mad at Apple for announcing their September showcase thing like the same day? Are we mad at all of the authors who had books release on Tuesday? No.”
“things like this are planned so far in advance, but of course anything to attack her,” another Redditor wrote. “if she would have made a tribute to dolly, she would have been accused of making it about herself. meghan cannot do anything.”
Those who defended Meghan are not necessarily huge fans themselves, but they’re bothered by the amount of hate and bullying she’s subjected to online. “I’m not a fan of Meghan but aren’t these launches set ahead of time?” a third person wrote. “It’s not like she woke up and said let’s do this now?”
In fact, some people found the backlash so “ridiculous” that they almost felt compelled to buy Meghan’s Spiced Apple Butter.
