Family Goes To Clean Late Father’s Home In LA, Finds One Million Pennies Worth $1 Million

Whenever you are in the process of cleaning out the home of a family member who recently died, you never know what you are going to come across. There is always the chance of finding antiques, money, items that have been lost for years, or even a large amount of pennies.

On the Cheddar News segment of “In Case You Missed It,” they share a story about a family who was cleaning out their late father’s home in Los Angeles and found more than 1 million pennies.

The value of the pennies could potentially be worth around $1 million. Usually, 1 million pennies are worth $10,000, but these pennies that were saved and stored are copper pennies that were made before World War II.

The United States started making pennies out of zinc-covered steel in 1943 because copper was needed for the war. All these copper pennies were found in bags, crates, and boxes. When you see the picture, you will be mind blown. You honestly wouldn’t think that someone would save this many pennies, but I know his family is thankful that he did.

The hosts of Cheddar News, Baker Machado and Hena Doba, briefly discuss their opinions on the penny. Baker admits, “I’m still one of those people and I know this is a controversial opinion, that wants to abolish the penny.” He explains that the penny was used more back in the day than it is now.

He then continues to explain that today it costs more money to make pennies than their actual value. So, the United States loses money by making pennies.

Baker does admit though, that this is one of the moments when people should be thankful that pennies do exist and also thankful that family members are collectors.

Hena then says, “Maybe if we hold on to today's pennies, in a few years our families might find $10,000 worth of pennies!” Hena immediately gave me the idea to start holding on to the coins I collect over time just to see how much I can save!
