What to Know
Roseanne Barr’s story about being asked to leave her granddaughter’s recital has rubbed a lot of people the wrong way. Based on how Roseanne, 73, told the story, some critics on social media thought it sounded like she felt entitled to certain privileges just because she’s famous. At one point in her rant, she even complained that the security guard at the event didn’t recognize her or know that she was a comedian.
Apparently, she found her behavior humorous—but critics online just think the whole situation is embarrassing for her.
Roseanne sounded like she couldn’t believe what happened to her at the recital.
But a lot of critics online have argued that her behavior was totally out of line. Apparently, while at her granddaughter’s recital, she insulted someone sitting in front of her (and they were within earshot) and also tried to bring alcohol into the recital. To Roseanne’s critics, these two things both sounded like obvious faux pas.
The drama started when, during intermission, Roseanne went to a store to buy a bottle of wine. She also “sampled it” but said it was “just a nip.” She seemed to know that she would not be able to bring her wine into the recital, but she returned to the space with it anyway.
“I came back, and they had already made me empty my entire purse into a plastic bag because my purse was too large and I might have a weapon,” she explained in her video shared via Instagram. “Which I said, ‘I don’t think… old women are not, I don’t think, going to bring weapons to their grandchildren’s dance recitals, but I understand it.”
She continued, “So I emptied everything into the plastic bag, including my adult diapers — humiliating.”
So, with regards to the wine, she asked the person at security to hold it for her.

This did not seem to go over well for her. “Anyway, so I come in with the wine, and I go, ‘Sir, I know you want to confiscate this wine, so would you just hold onto it for me until after the performance?'” she recalled. According to Roseanne, the security guard shouted, “Absolutely not!”
She responded, “What, do you want me to chug it right here in front of you?” Roseanne acted as if the security guard was problematic because he did not seem to recognize her or understand her sense of humor. He reportedly told her, “You are to go to your car and put that wine in the car with you, or you are not allowed back in here!”
She clearly did not appreciate this response.”‘Cause he doesn’t f—— get that it’s me and that I’m a comedian, or that s— was funnier than f—, so f— you,” she complained in her video. After the experience, Roseanne concluded that people in Texas are “too f—ing stupid.” She suggested that she might have better luck living in Florida, though she admitted to being kicked out of Mar-a-Lago before as well.
Although she admitted that she might have to tone it down a bit and be less “exuberant,” she also complained that she hates it when “people don’t think I’m funny.”
Her story centered on the wine drama, but at the recital, she also said, “I can’t see over this fat bastard in front of me.”
People were not impressed.

Roseanne’s rant has been circulating on X, and while some people found it funny and said it’s just Roseanne’s sense of humor, many others argued that her behavior was mortifying.
People accused her of making a day that should’ve been about her grandchildren about herself instead. “That’s not funny, not at all,” one critic wrote on X. “Takes a memory of her Grandma being at her recital from the grandchild and makes a fuss about an employee not holding her wine-at a school recital? Nope, that was ignorant, not funny.”
Someone else said they were a fan of Roseanne, but at the same time, they couldn’t defend her behavior this time. “I have more respect for my grandchildren to draw the attention on me or not filter my mouth and let it be their night, she missed out…drink at home if you have to drink or not even go maybe,” they wrote.
“Her behavior is an elitist behavior,” another critic commented. “She thinks she should be able to do what she wants because of who she is. Ridiculous. Now who the f is dumb enough to try and bring a bottle of booze into a child’s event?”
