What to Know
When the bombing of a girls’ elementary school in Iran killed 175 people (including many children), President Donald Trump blamed Iran. A New York Times reporter asked him if the United States was to blame, and Trump responded, “No. In my opinion and based on what I’ve seen, that was done by Iran… They’re very inaccurate, as you know, with their munitions. They have no accuracy whatsoever. It was done by Iran.”
But more recently, a reporter asked Trump why no one else seems to be saying the same thing about the attack. At this point, multiple outlets have reported that the U.S. seems to be responsible for the attack, and even “Secretary of War” Pete Hegseth did not exactly agree with Trump’s claim.
The reporter directly called Trump out for this.

New York Times White House reporter Shawn McCreesh pointed out that Trump is “the only person” saying Iran was responsible for the attack. When Trump originally made that claim, Hegseth was asked if what Trump said was true. Hegseth said they were “still investigating.” He added, “But the only side that targets civilians is Iran.”
Video evidence suggests that the U.S. was responsible because it shows a Tomahawk missile hitting a naval base by the school. No one else involved in this war is using Tomahawk missiles, according to the New York Times.
So, McCreesh confronted Trump like this: “You just suggested that Iran somehow got its hands on a Tomahawk and bombed its own elementary school on the first day of the war. But you’re the only person in your government saying this. Even your Defense Secretary wouldn’t say that, when he was asked, standing over your shoulder, on your plane, on Saturday. Why are you the only person saying this?”
Trump’s response was not reassuring.
Q: You just suggested Iran got a Tomahawk and bombed its own elementary school. But you're the only person in your govt saying this. Even your defense secretary wouldn't say that. Why are you the only person saying this?

TRUMP: Because I just don't know enough about it. It's… pic.twitter.com/C9yy4RFFSj
He essentially admitted that he doesn’t really know what he’s talking about when it comes to this particular topic. Great.
“Because I just don’t know enough about it,” Trump responded to the reporter. “I think it’s something that I was told is under investigation, but Tomahawks are used by others. As you know, numerous other nations have Tomahawks. They buy ’em from us. But I will certainly, whatever the report shows. I’m willing to live with that report.”
So, people see this as Trump admitting that he just makes things up.

Because if he truly doesn’t “know enough,” why did blame Iran with so much confidence? Hegseth had said the attack was under investigation, while Trump clearly asserted that “it was done by Iran.” Now, though, he’s suddenly saying that he’s not all that informed. Someone on X paraphrased Trump like this: “I don’t know enough about it. But it was Iran.”
A lot of people online came to the same conclusion after hearing Trump’s response: As one person on X wrote, “So let me get this straight. When the president of the United States doesn’t know anything about something he just throws out random things?”
People had already suspected this was the case, but hearing Trump admit to that wasn’t exactly comforting. “He just gave away his entire shtick: if he doesn’t know, he’ll just make it up,” another person commented.
Someone else said Trump “should apologize for lying to the American people.” But some people could also see a bit of truth in what he said this time. Another critic said, “He doesn’t know enough. For once he told the truth.”
