President Donald Trump says a lot of weird, unhinged, and/or controversial things, but a recent mistake he made has people genuinely concerned about his well-being. It’s often the case that when Trump says something strange (like when he made a comment about having a threesome with his sons), some of his supporters argue that he was merely joking.
That did not seem to be the case when he confused Small Business Administration Administrator Kelly Loeffler and rapper Nicki Minaj.
The blunder actually happened more than once.

Clips of Trump’s speech from a recent White House event have been circulating on social media, where some of his supporters have tried to argue that he simply “misspoke.” But he actually referred to Kelly Loeffler as Nicki Minaj more than once, suggesting that he really did mix up the two. Which, to many critics, felt like a pretty significant and wild mistake to make.
“Honest mistake. Hard to tell Kelly and Nicki apart. They’re virtual twins,” one person wrote sarcastically on X. Aside from the fact that they look nothing alike and do not have similar jobs whatsoever, their names also don’t sound anything alike, which made the mix-up even more concerning to people online. “Two names that aren’t in any way similar. wtf,” someone else commented.

It clearly did not go as planned, though. First, he spoke about Jeff Sprecher, president of Intercontinental Exchange, before moving on to praise his wife (who is definitely not Nicki Minaj, by the way).
“Jeff is great, and he’s married to a person who’s doing a phenomenal job at the SBA small business, Nicki Minaj, who is so incredible,” Trump said. He added, “They call it ‘small business,’ Nicki, but when you add it up, it’s bigger than any bank probably in the world, right?”
After seeing the clip, some critics said it might be time for Trump to take another one of the cognitive tests that he has supposedly “aced.” One person on X tagged the White House and White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt and wrote, “schedule another psych visit at Walter Reed!”
Some saw the mistake as a sign that Trump is “deteriorating by the hour.” Another critic wrote, “Sigh. Just go to bed grandpa, ffs.” And someone else said, “WTF IS HE STILL DOING IN THE WHITE HOUSE ???”
He really did recognize Minaj at the same event.

But that doesn’t explain why he mentioned her when talking about the SBA Administrator. When introducing the real Nicki Minaj, Trump said, “We also have a woman that is so respected and so hot and so great and such a great friend of — I don’t say conservative, I say of common sense. She’s a fantastic person, and she’s a woman that’s respected by everybody, and she’s got real talent: Nicki Minaj.”
Several critics were bothered by the fact that he called Minaj “hot” during his introductions, but others couldn’t get over the fact that his mistake made it look like he thinks she’s SBA Administrator.
“He thinks Nicki Minaj is the SBA administrator –Does he think Kid Rock is the Sec of Defense?” a critic joked. Several critics also mentioned some of Trump’s previous strange comments to mock him, including when he specified that the word “dumb” has a “b” in it and when he said he’s the most popular person on “Tic Tac” (meaning TikTok).
“Dumb with a b…” one person wrote in response to the clip of Trump’s blunder. “How does he get Kelly Loeffler confused with Nicki Minaj?” someone else commented. “And he sounds like s—.” But hey, as some people joked in the comments, at least he’s “number one on Tic Tac.”
