A Baby Born With Organs Outside Of Body Is ‘Thriving’ After Being Wrapped In Cling Wrap

A mom from the United Kingdom says that a simple procedure saved her baby girl, who was born with her organs outside of her body. Sadie Montgomery, 21, found out about her daughter's condition during her 12-week scan. She was told that her baby might have gastroschisis or exomphalos, and doctors presented her with different methods that could be used to identify which condition her baby was dealing with, reported the New York Post.

When Sadie found out her daughter had gastroschisis, she said she "couldn’t find any other moms going through the same thing."

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, babies with gastroschisis have a hole in their belly, so some of the baby's organs can be found outside of the body. The CDC also notes that the condition seems to be becoming more common, especially for young moms.

Learning that her baby's organs were located outside of her body shocked Sadie. "[The nurse] gently told me that sometimes babies' tummies don’t form properly. I just burst into tears," she told South West News Service.

Luckily, the mom says her daughter, Dorothy, is "thriving" now despite having an extreme case of the birth defect. The mom said that Dorothy was born with numerous organs outside of her body, including her kidneys, stomach, liver, fallopian tubes, intestines, and ovaries.

Dorothy was born on February 12, 2024. Two weeks later, she was already doing well, according to the mom.

The mom said doctors wrapped the baby in cling wrap "to keep her insides moist." The baby was transferred to Southampton Hospital, where she was cured through a simple procedure using a silicone bag and sterile strips, the mom explained.

“It was absolutely crazy, her tummy literally just closed," Sadie said, adding that her baby is "doing really well" now.
