Virginia Teacher Shot By 6-Year-Old In The Classroom Breaks Her Silence For The First Time

School shootings occur far too frequently in the United States. It feels like we haven't properly mourned one tragic event before another hits the news cycle. One such incident in Virginia is hard to forget or even imagine. On January 6 of this year, a 6-year-old student shot his teacher.

Teacher Abigail Zwerner opened up about her horrifying experience for the first time to Savannah Guthrie on the Today show. Even though it was and continues to be a traumatic burden to live with, Abigail is maintaining her positive attitude. Some days are easier than others.

Abigail admits her recovery has not been easy, mentally or physically. "I've been doing okay. It's been challenging. I've gone through a lot of obstacles and challenges. Some days are not-so-good days, where I can't get up out of bed. Some days are better than others, where I'm able to get out of bed and make it to my appointments,” she began.

This brave teacher refuses to be defeated and actively chooses positivity every day. "But for going through what I've gone through, I try to stay positive. You know, try to have a positive outlook on what's happened and where my future's heading,” she said.

At the time of shooting, Abigail was presenting a lesson to the class. The bullet went through her hand and chest. She heroically got her students to safety before ever worrying about her own injuries. Newport News Police Chief Steve Drew credits her with saving lives that day.
