You may have heard that Prince Harry recently released his memoir, Spare, where he gives his side of many of the controversies that have surrounded the royal family over the last few decades.
One of the instances brought up in the book is the infamous argument between Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton about the dress Princess Charlotte, Kate’s daughter, wore to Harry and Meghan’s wedding. Prince Harry just revealed the text messages that caused a tearful breakdown days before the ceremony.
When rumors of the fight first leaked back in 2018, it was reported that Meghan had allegedly made Kate cry over an argument concerning the dress. Claims have since been made that the leak got one vital piece of information wrong, perhaps even strategically.
It was Kate who caused Meghan to cry, Harry says in the book, noting that he found his soon-to-be wife “sobbing on the floor.”
Princess Charlotte, now 7, was set to walk down the aisle as a bridesmaid at the royal wedding. According to Harry, Kate sent a text to Meghan four days before the wedding to say the dress didn’t fit her daughter.
“Charlotte’s dress is too big, too long, too baggy," the text apparently began.
"She cried when she tried it on at home,” the Princess of Wales allegedly wrote to the bride-to-be.
At the time, Meghan was dealing with drama from her father, who was revealed to be staging photos for the paparazzi ahead of the wedding. The stressful ordeal was detailed in the couple’s Netflix documentary series, Harry & Meghan.
Due to the distraction, Meghan took a day to respond to the text, according to Harry.
“Meg didn’t reply to Kate straight away,” the prince wrote. “Yes, she had endless wedding-related texts, but mostly she was dealing with the chaos surrounding her father.”
“So the next morning she texted Kate that our tailor was standing by,” he added.
“Right,” Megan’s response reportedly began. “And I told you the tailor has been standing by since 8am,” she continued.
“Here. At KP [Kensington Palace]. Can you take Charlotte to have it altered, as the other mums are doing?”
Harry said Kate responded by insisting that all the dresses “needed to be remade,” per the New York Post.
According to the outlet, Harry states in his book that “Meg asked if Kate was aware of what was going on right now. With her father. Kate said she was well aware, but the dresses. And the wedding is in four days!”
It was finished when Kate responded “fine” to the text. According to Harry, though, the bickering took a toll on Meghan, who cried about the ordeal.
He noted in the book, however, that Kate came by the next morning with flowers and a card to apologize.
The incident soon leaked to the media, with the angle that it was Meghan who made Kate cry. Harry alleged that palace officials refused to put out a statement disputing the reports, further fueling his anger toward the family.
Harry has repeatedly stated in recent interviews and in his documentary series that he believes the palace was allegedly strategically part of the leaks that led to stories about him and Meghan.
