Heart fans are not happy about some comments that Nancy Wilson made. The 71-year-old musician recently said she’s embarrassed to be an American right now. In response, some fans said they were embarrassed to have supported her music career in the past.
Though some fans were disgusted by Nancy’s political comments, Heart has not really shied away from politics. During a new interview with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Nancy explained that the band’s song “Crazy on You” was written in response to the Vietnam War.
Nancy previously explained the lyrics to American Songwriter. “When Ann was writing the lyrics, I know that she was — the times were very troubled, kind of like today,” Nancy explained. “Very much like today. And, you know, it was kind of a call to your partner to be like, ‘I know the world is just insanely crazy here right now. But I just want us to go crazy together. To let it all just fall away so it’s only just you and me here!'”
During the recent Milwaukee Journal Sentinel interview, Nancy elaborated on how the 1975 single is still relevant today. “We were kind of embarrassed at that time to call ourselves American because of the dirty politics of the Vietnam War,” she said. “To be as subtle as possible, it’s more embarrassing now.”
After hearing that Nancy thinks it’s “embarrassing” to be American, some fans reacted to the comments on social media. On X, one fan wrote that Nancy’s recent interview “ruined it for one of my all-time favorite bands.”
“They’re embarrassed to be Americans?” the fan wrote. “I’m embarrassed that I saw them twice and bought a lot of their albums, helping fund the platform for her outrageous political comments.”
Other former Heart fans said they were embarrassed that they had enjoyed the band’s music. “I used to love Heart, but I will never listen to them again,” another fan wrote on X. “It’s embarrassing to be a Heart fan now,” a third fan wrote.
Some people even urged the rock musician to leave the country due to her political beliefs. “Go live in Ireland with Rosie O’Donnell then,” a fourth person posted on X.
During the recent interview, Nancy spoke about another Heart song that feels especially relevant today: “Barracuda.” The song is about “a real sleazeball with a satin jacket” and “is even more relevant in the salacious billionaire culture with the grab-them-by-the-[expletive] mentality,” Nancy explained.
