What you're about to see in the video below is truly a shocking sight. No, it's neither a lobster claw or a prop pulled off the set of some sci-fi movie. It's actually the rarely seen form of one of the largest beetles on Earth.
Forget beetles — it's one of the largest insects on Earth, period!
Meet the Hercules beetle, an aptly named insect with an instantly recognizable mega-horn that takes up nearly half its body.
If the adult form of the insect weren't impressive enough, in the video below, you'll see the beetle's rarely seen form: its pupa stage.
Filmed by Hirofumi Kawano, an insect enthusiast who also studies them, the video shows him holding what at first glance appears to be a lobster claw.
Then he turns the pupa around, and the infant begins to move!
According to him, after the egg and larval stages, the Hercules beetle grows a striking red chrysalis, or a cocoon.
Nonetheless, the beetle is still able to move around while locked in there.
The Hercules beetle is one of the most stunning insects in the world. Even though its pupa looks more like an alien baby, it's still amazing to see!
The animal kingdom never ceases to amaze!
