Some people have long took issue with the way Vice President JD Vance talks about his wife. For one, they don’t think he’s done enough to stick up for his wife and defend her from racist comments. Additionally, the way he’s spoken about their decision to have a fourth child has also raised lots of questions about how Usha truly felt about it.
Scrolling through Usha’s social posts (or posts in which JD talks about Usha), you’ll often find a handful of people urging Usha to leave her husband, or at the very least, asking her why she’s with him. Recently, an awkward greeting on the Father’s Day edition of Usha’s “Storytime with the Second Lady” podcast left people wondering whether they actually like (or know) each other. One of the comments on an Instagram Reel for the episode reads, “Usha, are you ok girl?”
Now, the way JD refers to his wife has people extra concerned.
During a recent appearance, JD talked about his wife.

And people are wondering if he forgot that she has a name. While speaking at the Nixon Presidential Library and Museum in California on Thursday, June 25, JD called his wife “the woman who is now the Second Lady of the United States and 36 weeks pregnant with baby number four.”
Those who were bothered by this saw all kinds of problems with this. In addition to being quite lengthy, people found it weirdly impersonal and unromantic. Like, “the woman?” Really?
“The romance, the love, the obvious chemistry… Oof,” one person on X wrote sarcastically. Someone else said, “D— JD, you have perfected the art of sweet talk.”
To some, it was more than just unromantic. It was outright offensive. “He never just refers to her by her name,” another critic noted. “Ever notice that? She’s a transaction for him.”
Someone even used the hashtag “#FreeUsha” and said, “Not ‘my wife,’ not ‘the love of my life who is carrying our child.'” Or, you know, maybe her name? “Can Usha divorce him already?” a commenter wrote.
It’s not the first time JD has referred to his wife in this way.
During several appearances and interviews, he has called Usha “the woman who is now the Second Lady.” Some people on X didn’t see anything wrong with that. To them, it seemed like a normal way of focusing on her current role (and her pregnancy?)
But it felt strangely robotic and detached to others. “Sounds legit… if I referred to my oldest son as ‘the first male child produced from my fertile womb.’ And my youngest child as ‘the final female child harvested after years of successful reproduction,'” one commenter wrote.
Plus, several critics also had an issue with what JD chose to focus on when speaking about his wife. “Usha clerked for a Supreme Court justice and worked at a prestigious San Francisco law firm,” someone pointed out. “But, pushing out baby number 4 is how JD defines her. Eye roll.”
Another critic added, “Total ick. What a creep.”
In a way, it reminded people of JD’s boss.
Trump seems to forget Barron is his son:

Because people have also noticed that President Donald Trump has an interesting way of talking about his youngest son, Barron Trump. “This is kind of like the way Trump calls Barron Melania’s son,” someone wrote in response to the recent clip of JD.
In May, the president’s comments about Barron went viral. At the time, he said, “Melania is an incredible mom. She has a little boy who’s quite tall.” People found it bizarre that the president said she has a son instead of saying we have a son. But, unlike JD, he did refer to his wife by her name.
